Want a Fresh Start on Social Media? Try This in 2025

Social media can create mixed feelings. I have built beautiful connections (including real-life friendships), grown my business, sourced and contacted homeowners for my books, and found inspiring women to interview for my podcast – all thanks to the power of social media.

But I’ve also wanted to quit many times…

In all honesty, I’ve been on a break for the past month, and it’s taking a lot of will power to get myself back online.

But I know that overall, the positives outweigh the negatives. And this year, I’m determined to use social media in a way that feels good.

That’s why I am focussed on being intentional with how and why I’m going to use social media in 2025.

If you want to reset your relationship with social media, consider these ideas to make the most of this powerful medium:

1. Set Boundaries

Just like with other areas of our life, we need to set boundaries.

Ask yourself:

When are you going to show up?

For how long?

Who are you going to spend time with?

There are a few simple ways that help stay on track:

  • Write captions in advance, such as in a Google Doc or type directly into the Instagram app and schedule in advance. You can now do this directly into Instagram. I find I am less distracted with social media when I work ahead of time rather than posting in the moment.

  • Edit who you follow. Just like we benefit from editing our spaces, don’t feel guilty about unfollowing accounts that no longer inspire or serve you. If it makes you feel more comfortable, use the “mute” function.

  • Use time limits on your preferred app via your phone. I set a daily limit of 20 minutes on Instagram. It’s just enough to engage with comments, and then step away.

Bonus Tip: Posting and/or responding to comments via your laptop can reduce the temptation to endlessly scroll.

2. Focus On What’s Working Right Now

When someone recently asked if I was moving to Bluesky, my answer was simple: no.

Instead of chasing the next platform, I’m focusing on what works right now.

Here’s what I’ve noticed:

  • Carousels are back. Hooray! Posting a gallery of images (instead of always creating Reels) is effective again, and you can now track their reach, which is encouraging.

  • 7 second Reels perform best. This is good news. You can repurpose clips from longer videos, so you’re not constantly creating new content.

  • Repetition is okay. Another win. Not everyone sees your posts so don’t worry about having to create new content all the time. Instead, focus on creating content that resonates the most.

Most importantly, check your data. Pay attention to what’s performing well and do more of that!

3. Make Every Second Count

If you’re using social media to grow an audience, reach clients, or build your business, remember this:

You’ve got less than 3 seconds to make a good first impression.

How?

Images are everything.

Your visuals are the first thing people notice — not your caption.

To make an impact:

  • Edit to elevate. Style your spaces with intention to create maximum impact. Avoid the temptation to add too much ‘stuff’. Instead, edit for impact. Less is often more when it comes to creating a space that feels elevated and cohesive.

  • Be helpful. Share content that solves a problem, inspires, or adds value. When you’re helpful, you position yourself as an expert people can trust.

  • Curate your feed. Treat Instagram like your portfolio. Share a mix of styled vignettes, cohesive room designs, and detail shots that showcase your unique approach to design.

Bonus Tip: Think of your posts as part of a larger visual story. If a “non-follower” discovers you, what will they think? Ensure your top 9 grid looks and feels consistent yet distinctive. This is your first impression. Ask yourself, “Does my feed represent the clients or projects I want to attract?”

Above all, make sure your posts reflect who you are and what you stand for. Stay true to your style and values – that’s what will truly set you apart.
